Language
English language skills remain in short supply but the situation is improving. If you are stick, try and find someone young to ask. Otherwise, the two languages spoken in Kiev are Russian and Ukrainian. Most street-level dialogue takes place in Russian and you will find that many people also have a smattering of German. While much about today’s Kiev is reassuringly European, visitors from the EU may find the Cyrillic alphabet disorientating. However, both Russian and Ukrainian are pronounced exactly as they are written, so if you can master the basic alphabet you will be able to read words accurately and will likely be surprised at how much you can actually understand!
