A history of feminine beauty

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the phenomenal appeal of Ukraine’s ladies is the fact that according to the available records it has always been this way.

Medieval Italian emissaries and renaissance travelers have left gushing accounts of the bold and beautiful ladies they encountered upon passing through Ukraine, while one of the country’s great heroines, Roxelana, offers perhaps the perfect historical example of a Ukrainian girl using her femininity to secure her place in the world. According to legend Roxelana was a 16th century West Ukrainian priest’s daughter who was sold into Ottoman slavery and found her way into the Sultan’s royal harem before using her charms to become Empress Consort and start a new dynasty. Tragically, many Ukrainian girls are still being sold into sex slavery, making Roxelana a somewhat macabre national icon.

Expats point to the absence of a feminist movement..

No feminist movement here.

Many besotted expats (known locally as ‘sexpats’) prefer to explain the phenomenon by pointing to the total absence of a feminist movement in Ukraine – indeed, most local ladies continue to regard the very term ‘feminist’ as a slur and prefer to put the emphasis firmly on the feminine. Instead of burning their bras, they claim to have found empowerment via parading around in theirs. This has helped make a social scene which is quite literally brimming with sexual potential but which also comes with numerous pitfalls.
