The good news is that budget travelers will soon find out for themselves that Ukrainian girls are often approachable and game for a flirt. This openness should not be taken as a green light for lechery, however, and is merely a reflection of the often more direct and unencumbered approach to socializing which is the generally norm in Ukraine. Kiev ladies love to dress provocatively but you must be careful not to fall into the trap of associating a ladies’ attire (or lack of) with her virtue.
On the Kiev nightlife scene you will likely encounter everything from sophisticated surgeons and postgraduate students to opera singers and advertising executives, and they might all conceivably be dressed in a manner more traditionally associated with Vegas hookers. This does not necessarily mean that they are any more likely to welcome your fumbling advances. Indeed, as you venture out onto the Kiev nightlife scene you will likely soon find that attitudes towards wannabe foreign lovers can range wildly from the genuinely enthusiastic to the outright mercantile.
Foreign men have long enjoyed many advantages in post-Soviet Ukraine, serving as magnets for the many thousands of girls looking to emigrate to the West or simply seeking an escape from the broken homes and despair which characterized the traumatic 1990s for many young Ukrainians.
This somewhat uneven playing field has meant that international couples face all manner of negative clichés which have become common currency in modern Ukrainian society, yet despite this stereotyping it is still extremely rare to find an expat male living in Kiev who is not either married to or dating a Ukrainian girl. In fact, the marriage agency industry has been one of the great boom sectors of the post-Soviet era.
However, even this prodigious growth has been far outpaced by the explosion in the Ukrainian sex trade that has occurred since 1991, and any visitor to Kiev should be aware that the city is a sex tourism hotspot.
